Three to die for 1971 war crimes in Moulvibazar

One of the convicts is on the run

Three individuals have been given the death sentence for crimes against humanity, including murder and rape, committed in Moulvibazar during the 1971 Liberation War.

International Crimes Tribunal-1, chaired by Justice Md Shahinur Islam, announced the verdict on Thursday.

The convicts are Abdul Aziz, Abdul Mannan, and fugitive Abdul Motin.

As many as 17 people, including the investigating officer of the case, testified against the three. 

An investigation against the three, who were accused of murder, genocide, rape, and torture in the Barlekha upazila during the Liberation War, started on November 14, 2016. 

On February 29, 2016, the tribunal issued arrest warrants against three convicts.

Moulvibazar Baralekha police arrested Abdul Aziz and Abdul Mannan on March 1.

They were produced before the tribunal the next day and were jailed for their crimes.

Abdul Aziz and Abdul Motin, who are brothers, were involved with Chhatra League during the 1971 Liberation war. 

They went to India for training to fight for Bangladesh, however, they escaped and joined Razakar forces in Moulvibazar.

Meanwhile, Abdul Mannan was the leader of the local Muslim League during the war.
