Bagerhat mayor lands in jail in two embezzlement cases

High Court ordered the accused to surrender on January 31

A court on Wednesday sent the Bagerhat municipality mayor and a former municipal secretary to jail after they surrendered before it in two embezzlement cases. 

Senior Judge Md Rabiul Islam of the District and Sessions Judge Court handed down the verdict after rejecting the bail petitions filed by Mayor Khan Habibur Rahman and Rezaul Karim. 

On January 31, the High Court bench comprising Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice Md Mostafizur Rahman ordered them to surrender within three weeks, while rejecting their anticipatory bail in the case. 

According to Bagerhat Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) counsel Milon Banerjee, Khulna ACC filed the case on October 7, 2020 against 18 people including the two prime accused, for illegally hiring people and embezzling around Tk1.26 crore. 

Another case was filed against the duo for embezzling Tk1 crore, allotted for building Abahani Sports Complex and Diabetes Hospital in the district.
