Rapists get life in prison five years after victim’s death in Khagrachhari

Rape victim succumbed to burn injuries in 2016 after taking treatment for eight months

A Khagrachhari court sentenced two persons to life imprisonment for raping a teenager at Matiranga six years ago. 

Women and Child Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Abu Taher handed down the verdict on Thursday.

The two convicts are Rezaul Hawlader, 37, son of Hanif Hawlader of Matiranga municipality, and Md Sabu Mia, 35, son of late Jamal Mia of the same area. 

The convicts each were ordered to pay a fine of Tk10 lakh and a compensation of Tk10 lakh to the family of the teenager, Public Prosecutor Advocate Bidhan Kanungo said. 

According to the case, the girl was gang-raped on April 17, 2016 at Sabu Mia's garden house in Matiranga. 

After the rape, the girl tried to commit suicide by setting herself on fire. 

She succumbed to her burn injuries after eight months on December 16, the Victory Day, the same year while undergoing treatment at Chittagong Medical College Hospital.

After investigating the case, the then officer-in-charge of Matiranga police station Shahadat Hossain Tito filed the charge sheet in the case on January 22, 2017.
