A Dhaka court has ordered a probe against Bangladesh Pratidin Editor Naem Nizam and six others in a case filed under the Digital Security Act for spreading false information.

Judge Ash Shams Jaglul Hossain directed the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to carry out an investigation in the case filed with the Cyber Tribunal by Barrister M Sarwar Hossain on Tuesday.

After recording the statement of the complainant, the court asked the CID to submit the report on March 15, bench officer Mohammad Shamim told Dhaka Tribune.

The other accused of the case include Bangladesh Pratidin Publisher Moynal Hossain Chjowdhury, Bangladesh Insider Editor Sayed Borhan Chowdhury, and several staff of Viral Pratidin.

According to case statement, Bangladesh Pratidin on September 7 last year published a news on the murder of college student Mosarrat Jahan Munia where Bashundhara Group Managing Director Sayem Sobhan Anvir is an accused.

The complainant, Barrister M Sarwar Hossain, was named as the plaintiff’s lawyer. Moreover, the report also said that he had been involved in the August 21 attack on the Awami League rally at Bangabandhu Avenue in 2004.

“But I just took part during a hearing on a non-confidence plea filed by the plaintiff,” Sarwar said.

According to him, on September 8, the newspaper published another item against the lawyer.  On the same day, Bangladesh Insider and Viral Pratidin published articles against him.
