Haji Salim ordered to surrender in trial court by 30 days

Full High Court verdict upholding 10-year term for graft published

Update : 02 May 2022, 08:52 PM

The High Court has ordered Awami League leader Haji Mohammad Salim MP to surrender to the trial court.

On Thursday, the court published the full text of its March 2021 verdict upholding his 10-year jail term in a graft case.

“We will challenge the verdict in the Appellate Division,” said the Dhaka 7 MP’s counsel Syed Ahmed Raja.

The 30 days will start after the High Court verdict reaches the trial court.

In 2008, a Dhaka court convicted Haji Salim of corruption and sentenced him to 10 years in jail with a Tk10 lakh fine in the case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission during the 2007 caretaker government.

The graft watchdog accused the lawmaker of accumulating wealth worth Tk14.65 crore beyond known sources of his income.

The High Court, however, scrapped the trial court verdict of an additional three-year jail term for concealing information regarding his wealth.
