A Chittagong court has sentenced a Rohingya drug smuggler to six years’ rigorous imprisonment.

The court also fined him Tk5,000 and an additional six months’ jail term in default.

Fourth Additional Chittagong Metropolitan Sessions Judge Shariful Alam Bhuiya passed the order on Wednesday.

The convict, Md Syed Alam, 20, is a Rohingya citizen of Myanmar. He is the son of Rustam Ali of A block at Leda refugee camp in Teknaf.

Bench Assistant Omar Fuad confirmed the verdict.

According to court sources, he was arrested on December 4, 2018 from in front of Municipal Shopping Complex 2 in Kotwali. At that time police recovered 1,650 pieces of yaba from him.

Tapan Kanti Sharma, sub-region inspector of Chittagong Metro Narcotics Control Department, then filed a case at Kotwali police station.

At present, Syed Alam, out on bail, has been absconding.
