A case has been filed against 43 people, including former joint secretary general of Hefazat-e-Islam Mamunul Haque, on charges of embezzling around Tk20 crore.
Maulana Abdur Razzak Qasemi, on behalf of a madrasa in Dhaka, filed the case with Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, under several sections of the Penal Code.
According to the case statement, the accused embezzled around Tk20 crore by showing costs of food items for the students and teachers of Al Madrasatul Mueenul Islam, located in Dhaka’s Vatara area, and buying rod and cement for construction purposes.
He also accused them of extortion and illegal entry into the madrasa.
The case statement further says the accused also looted money, receipt books, expenditure vouchers, cheque books, ledger books and stock books stored in the madrasa office on October 9, 2020, during a clash between two groups of Tabligh jamaat.
Following the case, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Morshed Al Mamun Bhuiyan on Wednesday directed the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to investigate the allegations and submit a report.
The other accused in the case include Maulana Ataullah, Mahfuzul Haque, Mufti Selim Ullah, Maulana Shahriar Mahmud, Mufti Mamunur Rashid, Maulana Hanjala, Hanjala bin Jobayer, Haji Jasim Uddin Dhali, Haji Aftab Uddin, Mamun Dhali, Faruk Hossain, Fazlur Rahman, Ferdous Dhali, Hafizur Rahman Sumon, Al Amin, Abdur Rahman, Rafiqul Islam, Maulana Mahmudul Hasan and Maulana Bin Yamin, Md. Osman, Hafizur Rahman, Solaiman, Maulana Talha, Maulana Golam Muktadir, Maula Mueenuddin, Maulana Nur Alam, Maulana Ali, Maulana Yusuf, Maulana Faisal, Maulana Tareq, Bayezid, Md. Humayun Ahmed, Md. Yasin, Maulana Abdur Razzak, Hafeez Abu Sayem, Maulana Abdur Aziz, Maulana Ali, Mufti Jasim Uddin, Maulana Zakir Hossain, Maulana Anwar Hossain and Maulana Anisur Rahman.
Previously, Mamunul was arrested from Jamiya Rahmaniya Arabia Madrasa in the capital’s Mohammadpur area on April 18.
The controversial Hefazat leader has been under the spotlight since April 3, when he was surrounded by locals and ruling party supporters with a woman, whom he had identified as his second wife, at Royal Resort in Sonargaon.
Local administration officials and police went to the resort upon hearing about the incident.
Later, a group of Hefazat supporters ran riot in the area, over which a total of seven cases have been filed.
Around 50 Hefazat leaders and activists have been arrested in the seven cases so far.
