A Dhaka court on Tuesday placed Hefazat-e-Islam’s former joint secretary general Mamunul Haque on a fresh five-day remand, in two separate cases.
Metropolitan Magistrate Satyabrata Sikder passed the order after the case investigation officer (IO) produced Mamunul before his court.
The IO had sought 10 more days to question the Hefazat leader in a terrorism case and seven days in a violence case -- both filed at Paltan police station.
The court also rejected Mamunul’s bail petition and granted police five days in the two cases to interrogate him.
Mamunul was produced before the court on completion of his seven-day remand in the cases filed with Motijheel and Paltan police over the anarchy carried out by Hefazat activists.
Previously, Mamunul was arrested from Jamiya Rahmaniya Arabia Madrasa in the capital’s Mohammadpur area on April 18.
Awami Jubo League’s Dhaka South unit Deputy Office Secretary Khandaker Arif-uz-Zaman filed a case against Mamunul and 16 others with Paltan police on April 6 over violence near the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque during Hefazat’s demonstrations on March 26.
The other case was filed with the Paltan police over Hefazat violence in 2021 in Dhaka.
