A Dhaka court has granted bail to the wife and daughter of Lakshmipur-2 lawmaker Mohammad Shahid Islam alias Kazi Papul in a case filed for allegedly amassing illegal wealth and money laundering.
Dhaka’s Senior Special Judge KM Imrul Kayes passed the order on Thursday, confirmed Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) counsel Mahmud Hossain Jahangir.
Papul’s wife Selina Islam and daughter Wafa Islam on December 27 surrendered before the court, seeking bail in the case filed on November 11 last year, he said.
“The court then granted them bail till today (Thursday) and did the same today again after their lawyer moved another bail plea,” he said.
The fresh bail, Jahangir said, will remain effective until the final probe report in the case is submitted.
Other than the two, the lawmaker himself and his sister-in-law Jasmine Prodhan are also named in the case filed by ACC Investigating Officer Salahuddin Ahmed over Tk2.31 crore illegal wealth and the laundering of Tk148 crore.
On June 6, Kuwait's Criminal Investigation Department arrested Shahid on charges of human trafficking, visa trading, and money laundering.
He was finally convicted of money laundering and human trafficking in Kuwait on December 28.
Papul became a lawmaker in the 2018 national election as an independent candidate. He also launched a successful bid to bring his wife to parliament as an MP in one of the seats reserved for women.
