A Dhaka court on Thursday fixed on November 19 to deliver its verdict in the case filed over the rape of a Dhaka University (DU) student in the city's Kurmitola area.
Judge Begum Mosammat Quamrunnahar of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal 7 passed the order after she finished hearing arguments of both defence and the prosecution, Special Public Prosecutor Afroza Farhana told Dhaka Tribune.
She also said: “We were able to prove the charges brought against the accused beyond any reasonable doubt.”
During Thursday’s hearing, accused Md Mojnu was present in the court.
On March 16, the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) had submitted the charge sheet in court against him.
Earlier, the Criminal Investigation Department’s (CID) Forensic Unit head Sheikh Nazmul Alam confirmed that a DNA test with samples from the rape survivor and Mojnu, 30, proved the latter's involvement in the crime.
On January 5, the second-year student of DU was raped in Kurmitola area after she mistakenly got off a bus there around 7pm on her way to a friend's house at Joar Sahara, also known as Shewra.
Later that day, the rape survivor's father filed the case at Cantonment police station, which was transferred to the DB on January 6.
The incident had caused shockwaves and triggered massive protests by students and humanitarian organizations across the country.
On January 8, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested Mojnu from Shewra rail crossing area.
On January 16, Mojnu confessed to committing the crime before a Dhaka court.
