Erfan Selim remanded, sued in two other cases

ACC starts collecting data on wealth statements of Erfan Selim

A Dhaka court on Wednesday placed Erfan Selim, son of Awami League MP Haji Md Selim, and his bodyguard Md Zahid on a three-day remand in a case filed by a navy official.

Meanwhile, four separate cases have been filed against Erfan Selim, who has been suspended from his position as Councillor of Ward no 30 of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), and his bodyguard Zahid under the Arms Act and Narcotics Control Act.

Delwar Hossain, inspector (operations), of Chawkbazar police station, filed two cases each against them early yesterday for possessing illegal firearms and drugs, said Sub-Inspector Shah Newaz, the duty officer.

Additional Metropolitan Magistrate Muhammad Asaduzzaman Nur issued the remand order.

Earlier, Dhanmondi police station Officer in-Charge (OC) Md Ashfaq Razib Hasan, the investigation officer of the case, produced Erfan in court, seeking a seven-day remand for interrogation in the case.

Lieutenant Wasif Ahmed Khan of Bangladesh Navy filed the case with Dhanmondi police station against four named accused, including Erfan, and several unnamed others.

According to the case statement, on Sunday a private car hit Lt Wasif's motorbike near Labaid Hospital at Dhanmondi around 7:45pm while he and his wife were returning to their Mohammadpur residence from Nilkhet.

After the accident, some people came out of the car and physically assaulted the navy officer and verbally abused his wife.

A Dhaka court on Wednesday sent Mizanur Rahman, driver of Dhaka-7 lawmaker Haji Md Salim, to jail, reports BSS.

After one-day remand, Dhaka’s Additional Metropolitan Magistrate Asaduzzaman Nur passed the order following an appeal of the case to the Investigation Officer of keeping Mizan in jail till completing the investigation.

ACC begins probe

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on Wednesday started collecting data on the wealth statements of Erfan Selim.

ACC commissioner Mozammel Haque Khan said the anti-corruption watchdog was investigating the wealth statements of MP Haji Selim and his son Erfan.

Legal action would be taken against them if any irregularities were found in their wealth statements, Mozammel said.

On Monday, RAB arrested Erfan from his father’s residence at Devdas Lane in Swarighat in Old Dhaka.

On the same day, a RAB mobile court sentenced Erfan, son of Dhaka-7 MP Haji Selim, and his bodyguard Zahid to a year in jail for possession of illegal walkie-talkies and liquor.

On Tuesday, detectives arrested another associate of Erfan from Tangail district in the case filed over the assault on the navy official.

A team of the Detective Branch of Police arrested Erfan’s associate AB Siddique, 45, in Tangail at around 3:30am, said Walid Hossain, deputy commissioner (media) at the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).

All named accused in the assault case are now behind bars. The first to be arrested was driver Mizanur Rahman.

The government on Tuesday also suspended Erfan from the post of councillor for assaulting the Navy official.
