Banani rape case: Shafat, Sakif, Nayeem among 5 charged

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) have pressed charges against all five suspects in the high profile Banani rape case. DMP Women Support and Investigation Centre Inspector Ismat Ara Emi filed the charges at the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court on Thursday afternoon. The sheet named Shafat Ahmed, Nayem Ashraf and Sadman Sakif, and Shafat's driver Billal Hossain and his bodyguard Rahmat Ali, who have all confessed before the court. "We have found all evidence needed to prove the crime," said DMP Joint Commissioner Krishna Pada Roy. Two female university students filed a case with Banani police on May 6, alleging that they were raped at the Raintree Hotel on the night of March 28 by Shafat, Nayem and Sadman, while Billal recorded the incident and Rahmat Ali held the victims at gun point.

Shafat’s father is one of the owners of Apan Jewellers. The plaintiffs said the rapists had repeatedly threatened and pressured them to withdraw the case. Separately, the plaintiffs said they would file another case under the Information and Communication Technology Act after their identities were revealed in several posts and pictures on Facebook.
