At least 40 judges, 136 staff of subordinate courts and 45 officials of the Supreme Court have been diagnosed with Covid-19 while working for the virtual courts, as of Friday.

Seventeen judges have recovered till Friday, said Md Saifur Rahman, special officer of Bangladesh Supreme Court, UNB reported.

Among the judges, Lalmonirhat Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Ferdous Ahmed died on June 24, the first such case in the country.

One judge has been undergoing treatment at a hospital, while 21 are undergoing treatment at home, Saifur said.

The Supreme Court urged the concerned district judges to take necessary steps in order to provide treatment to the judges and the court officials, he said.

A five-member committee has been formed, with the Supreme Court registrar as its head, to keep constant communication in this regard, UNB reported.

Besides, another five-member committee has been formed to supervise the treatment of the subordinate court officials.

The court operations were suspended on March 26, when the country went into a general holiday for two months to stem the spread of Covid-19. Trial proceedings resumed through videoconference on May 11, during the general holiday.
