A man in Uttara’s Dakshin Khan area in Dhaka was allegedly killed by his business associate who owed him Tk60,000, say police.
Helal Uddin, who had a mobile banking business, was killed by Rupam Sarkar on June 14, the Detective Branch said after arresting the 30-year-old from the capital's Gabtoli late on Sunday.
“They were business associates. Rupam owed Helal Tk60,000,” Moshiur Rahman, deputy commissioner of DB, told the media on Monday.
The accused planned to kill Helal so that he would not have to return that money, according to the senior police officer.
Rupam wanted to leave the capital and go into hiding in Bogra. He was planning to go on to Barisal from there when his wife and mother-in-law were held by the police.
He was arrested from the Gabtoli Bus Stand while he was trying to leave for Bogra, the police official said.
Later on Monday, a Dhaka court remanded Rupom for two days after a virtual hearing of the investigator’s petition seeking a 10-day custody for interrogation.
On June 15, police recovered Helal’s body parts from a number of sacks found in several different places of Dakshin Khan. Helal’s older brother Md Hozayafa identified the body and filed a murder case against unidentified people.
Police said they found clues regarding the murder after analysing CCTV footage, and the deceased’s call history.
CCTV footage of the area showed a man carrying a loaded sack, which police believe contained body parts of the victim.
On June 18, DB police held Rupam’s wife Moni Sarkar, 18, and his mother-in-law Shahina Begum, 48, and recovered Tk33,000 from their possession.
The two were sent to a Dhaka court the following day.
Under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, Moni and Shahina confessed to assisting Rupam in killing mobile banking businessman Helal, said DB police sources.
Police were on the hunt for Rupam since then and finally arrested him on Sunday.
According to police, Rupam offered to sell a used photocopy machine to Helal. On June 14, Helal went to Rupam’s house in that regard.
Moni then gave Helal a cup of tea with sedatives. Helal was strangled to death after he fell unconscious.
Later that night, Rupam and his family dismembered Helal’s body into three parts, which were dumped by Rupam in various water bodies of Dakshin Khan.
