The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has fixed May 28 for delivering its verdict on the petition filed by BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia for quashing proceedings of Barapukuria coalmine graft case against her.
A four-member bench led by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha fixed the date upon completion of the hearing on the petition Monday morning, UNB reported.
AJ Mohammad Ali moved for the BNP chief while M Khurshed Alam Khan argued for the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC).
On September 17 last year, the High Court rejected a petition filed by Khaleda Zia for quashing proceedings of Barapukuria coalmine corruption case.
Later, she filed a petition with the Appellate Division seeking cancellation of the HC verdict as well as the quashing of the graft case proceedings.
The Anti-Corruption Commission filed the case on February 26, 2008 against Khaleda and 15 others for causing a loss of Tk159 crore to the state exchequer by awarding the contract for operation of the Barapukuria mine to a Chinese company between June 2003 and June 2005, abusing power.
The charge sheet was pressed on October 5 the same year against the BNP chief and 15 other accused.
