A Dhaka court has granted newly-elected Comilla City Corporation Mayor Monirul Haque Sakku bail until May 24 in a case accusing him of amassing wealth illegally and concealing information.
Sakku surrendered before the court on Tuesday through his lawyer Masud Ahmed Talukder.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Court ordered Sakku's arrest on April 18 in the case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission.
Sakku's counsel sought bail for his client informing the court that the swearing-in was scheduled for May 13.
Sakku won the second consecutive elections to the city corporation in March.
On January 7, 2008, ACC Assistant Director Shahin Ara Mamotaz filed the case against Sakku and his wife Afroza Jasmine for hiding information of wealth worth Tk1.12 crore and amassing wealth worth over Tk4.5 crore illegally.
On February 4 last year, Assistant Director Nurul Huda, also the investigation officer, pressed charges against Sakku and dropped his wife’s name.
