HC questions decision to import meat

Secretaries to the ministries of commerce, fisheries and livestock and religious affairs, director generals of Bangladesh Standard and Testing Institution (BSTI) and department of livestock have been made respondents to the rule

The High Court has issued a rule asking why the import of meat should not be declared unlawful when the country already has a surplus production of meat.

The bench of Justices FRM Nazmul Ahasan and KM Kamrul Kader issued the rule after hearing a writ in this regard on Wednesday.

The court also asked the authorities concerned that why it should not give a directive to ensure the quality and purity of meat.

Secretaries to the ministries of commerce, fisheries and livestock and religious affairs, director generals of Bangladesh Standard and Testing Institution (BSTI) and department of livestock have been asked to respond to the ruling in four weeks.

Last week, Supreme Court lawyer Md Mosabbir Hossain filed the writ seeking the necessary order not to open import facilities of cattle meat.

Advocates Md Kamruzzaman and Nazmul Huda appeared for the writ petitioner while Deputy Attorney General M Saiful Alam represented the state.

Advocate Kamruzzaman, after the hearing, told reporters, according to the livestock department the country is producing more meat per year that the demand which is why the it was important to challenge the government’s decision.
