12 to die for killing advocates' clerk

Mobarak Hossain Bhuiyan was beaten to death over land dispute on August 22 in 2015

Twelve people have been sentenced to death for killing an advocates' clerk in Bazidpur of Kishoreganj.

Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal Judge Md Monir Kamal passed the order on Monday.

Advocates' clerk of Dhaka Bar Association, Mobarak Hossain Bhuiyan, 45, was beaten to death over land dispute on August 22 in 2015.

The death row inmates are: Md Mojammel Hoque Bhuiyan, Md Mahbubur Rahman Bhuiyan, Afzal Bhuiyan, Emdadul Bhuiyan, Nayon Bhuiyan, Sultana Akhter, Delwar Hossain, Ruhul Amin, Shipon Miya, Bidhan Shannyashi, and Nilufer Akhter.

Delwar, Bidhan, and Nilufer remain absconding.

The 12 were also fined Tk20,000 each.

Two more - Taslima Akhter, and Shamim alias Faisal bin Ruhul - who were also sentenced to a year of imprisonment and a fine of Tk20,000 fine, also remain absconding.

Mobarak was beaten to death over land disputes in Bazidpur of Kishoreganj on August 22 in 2015.

He was the secretary of Mrittuka Protibondhi Foundation o Protibondhi Shishu Pathshala, the institute which stood on the grounds over which he had disputes with the perpetrators.

On January 2, 2017, Bazidpur police station Inspector Moqbul Hossain Molla filed the charge sheet in the murder case filed by the victim's brother Advocate Md Mojammel Hoqueagainst the now convicted.

Thirty-one witnesses had testified in court in the case.
