The High Court has issued a rule asking why the printing press and other equipment of the opposition daily Amar Desh newspaper should not be returned to its acting editor, Mahmudur Rahman.
On April 11, 2013, police arrested Mahmudur from the Amar Desh office and sealed off the press at Tejgaon. Since then, publication of the newspaper has remained suspended.
Mahmudur was first arrested in April 2013 during a country-wide crackdown on the opposition.
He faced 78 charges including inciting religious tension and the attempted murder of the son of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, and was released on bail in November 2016.
The 63-year-old filed a petition this week praying to the court to direct the government to give back the equipment after his petition was rejected by the lower court.
The High Court bench of Justice Md Miftah Uddin Choudhury and Justice ANM Bashir Ullah on Tuesday asked the government to come up with an answer to the ruling within two weeks.
