Khaleda gets 6-month bail in defamation case

However, she cannot be released from jail as she has been convicted in two other cases

The High Court has granted six-months' bail to BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia in two separate defamation cases against her.

The bench of Justice Mohammad Abdul Habib, and Justice Ahmed Sohel, granted the bail on Tuesday.

The bench set the date for the order after concluding a hearing on the bail petitions on Monday.

Barrister Moudud Ahmed, Advocate AJ Mohammad Ali, and Zainul Abedin stood for Khaleda Zia, while Deputy Attorney General Fazlur Rahman Khan represented the state.

However, Khaled Zia cannot be released from jail as she is convicted in two other cases. 

In 2014 and 2016, two cases were filed against Khaleda, and trial is currently ongoing at the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court, for making comments hurting the religious sentiments of Muslims, and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

AB Siddique, president of Bangladesh Jananetri Parishad, a front organization of ruling Awami League, filed the cases.

The trial court issued arrest warrants against Khaleda on March 20, after which the BNP chairperson filed two petitions with the High Court, on May 22, seeking bail in those cases.
