Update : 11 Jun 2019, 09:25 PM

The High Court yesterday asked the authorities concerned to explain why it should not order formulation of an interim scheme aimed at compensating and rehabilitating rape victims.

The vacation bench of Justice Farah Mahbub and Justice Md Khairul Alam issued the rule after hearing a petition filed by Children's Charity Bangladesh Foundation.

The court also asked the authorities to explain in four weeks why they should not be directed to give Tk50 lakh each to the families of Shahinur Akhter Tania and Sumaiya Akhter, who were raped in Kishoreganj and Rajshahi, respectively, last month.

Shahinur, a nurse from Tangail, was killed after she was gang-raped on May 8, and Sumaiya committed suicide on May 17 after she was gang-raped.

A total of 11 people — including the secretaries of Home Ministry and Children and Women Affairs Ministry and the inspector general of police — were made respondent to the petition filed o May 26.
