District AL leader sent to jail for drug peddling

The cases were lodged on September 22, 2017, with the Barishal Kotwali Police Station, by Sub-inspector Delwar Hossain as the complainant,  after Zahidul Islam was arrested from Rupatali with 52 pieces of yaba

A Barisal court on Sunday sent district Awami League organizing secretary, Zahidur Rahman alias Monir Molla, to jail in connection with a drug peddling case.

Shamim Ahmed, metropolitan magistrate of Barisal, ordered his imprisonment after he surrendered before the court. The magistrate denied Zahidur's plea for bail.

Inspector Jasimuddin, investigation officer of the two drug peddling cases filed against the Awami League leader, confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune.

"Chargesheets regarding both lawsuits were submitted to the court on December 21, 2018, against 15 suspects," said Jasimuddin, an officer of the Barisal Metropolitan Police Detective Branch.

The accused include: Zahidur Rahman, police constable Saiful Islam Sani, Zahidul Islam, Kamrul Islam Talukdar, Molla Nasir, Nasir Khan, Md Milon, Shamim Chowdhury, Azizul Huq, Roksana Begum, Syed Morshedur Rahman, Ratna Borua, Zahed Hossain, Abdus Salam, and Sohel Munshi.

The cases were lodged on September 22, 2017, with the Barishal Kotwali Police Station, by Sub-inspector Delwar Hossain as the complainant,  after Zahidul Islam was arrested from Rupatali with 52 pieces of yaba.

Based on information provided by him during interrogation, an additional 300 pieces of yaba were recovered from his room at the West Zone Power Distribution Company (WZPDCL) rest house.. 

His associate, Kamrul Islam, was also arrested from the spot. 

Following the arrest of police constable Saiful Islam with 100 pieces of yaba, police lodged two separate cases with Barisal Kotwali Police Station against the three.

In his confession statement, Zahidul Islam said that the accused  Awami Leaguer, Zahidur Rahman, had arranged accommodations for the drug peddlers  at the WZPDCL rest house.
