Man gets life for raping handicapped teen girl

A 37-year-old man has been sentenced to life term rigorous imprisonment and fined Tk 50,000 for raping a physically challenged teenage girl in Sherpur. Judge Md Mosleh Uddin of the district’s Women Children Repression Prevention Tribunal on Tuesday pronounced the verdict against Mofiz Uddin, a resident of Nalitabari upazila’s Sidhuli village. The judge also ordered the authorities concerned to realise the fine and give it to the victim’s family as compensation. Public Prosecutor Golam Kibria Bulu said that Mofiz picked up the girl, who was just 14 then, from her house, where she was living with her grandmother Firoza Begum, to a nearby bamboo grove, raping her there on April 25 evening last year. After she started screaming, Firoza came to her rescue, though Mofiz, an irrigation machine operator, managed to flee the scene in the meantime, the PP added. Later a case was filed against Mofiz as the lone suspect, in which saw nine prosecution witnesses testified. The victim’s parents are apparel workers in Dhaka, where they were during the incident.
