Update : 21 Mar 2017, 05:29 AM
Ruling Awami League lawmaker Abdur Rahman Bodi secured bail on Monday after surrendering before a Chittagong court in connection with a graft case filed against him by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). Divisional Senior Special Judge Ruhul Amin granted him bail after the lawmaker appeared before the court as per a previous order and prayed for bail. The court granted him bail upon a bond of Tk50,000. ACC’s lawyer advocate Mesbah Uddin Chowdhury said the case was filed against Bodi on December 17, 2007 for concealing information of Tk56 lakh wealth in a statement. The deputy director of ACC at the time, Abul Kalam Azad had filed the case with Double Mooring police station in Chittagong city.

The case proceedings remained pending for a long time but on February 22, the High Court finally lifted the stay order and asked the accused to surrender before the lower court within one month. According to the case statements, Bodi - then a municipality chairman and now a lawmaker from Cox’s Bazar 4 constituency - accumulated illegal wealth of over Tk79 lakh. Charges against Bodi were pressed in this case on June 26, 2008. On November 2, Judge Md Abu Ahmed Jamadar of the Dhaka’s Special Judge’s Court 3 jailed Bodi for three years in a case filed for concealing wealth information by the ACC. On November 16, the High Court granted him interim bail for six months.

The lawmaker, who has earned a bad name for his alleged involvement in smuggling and other criminal activities including militancy, had been sent to jail after the pronouncement of the lower court verdict. After being questioned by the ACC officials in 2014, Bodi claimed that he was innocent. He even vowed to step down if the investigators could prove that he had laundered even a single penny or concealed information about wealth in his election affidavit.
