The High Court has granted six-month bail to Tara Mia, a man with a deformed arm who was accused in a case over an attack on police personnel in Sunamganj just before the 11th general election.
The bench of Justices Md Rais Uddin and Jahangir Hossain on Wednesday passed the order after hearing a bail plea filed by Tara’s lawyer Md Abidul Haque.
Abidul showed the court a report published in The Daily Star on Wednesday and said a physically challenged man such as Tara Mia could never attack the police, reports The Daily Star.
He also said that the High Court took his argument into cognisance and granted Tara Mia bail.
The court also asked Tara to surrender before the lower court concerned in Sunamganj after his bail term expires.
Tara Mia, 45, is one of the 52 named accused in the case filed over the reported attack on policemen in Sunamganj’s Mallikpur Bazar area on December 28, two days before the general polls.
The case was lodged by police at the Jamalganj Police Station in Sunamganj by the station’s Assistant Sub-Inspector Tarikul Islam. Another 70 to 80 unnamed people were also accused in the case.
According to case details, the accused had gathered unlawfully in the Mallikpur Bazar area and brought out a procession in support of the "sheaf of paddy" around 4:40pm that day.
They allegedly blocked the road and attacked police with machetes, hockey sticks and iron rods, leaving at least five policemen, including Tarikul, injured.
Expressing his happiness after receiving bail on Wednesday, Tara also urged the court to acquit him from the charges, reports The Daily Star.
