A Sirajganj court has convicted four people and sentenced them to death for the murder of a woman, named Sumi Rani Roy, in the municipality 18 years ago.
The convicted, including the victim's husband, have been on the run since the murder in 2001.
Judge Fazle Khoda Nazir of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal handed down the verdict in absence of the convicts on Tuesday.
Additionally, the court also fined each of them Tk1 lakh in penalty. Another accused in the case died before the verdict.
Advocate Anwar Parvez Limon, assistant public prosecutor, confirmed the matter.
According to the case details, Sumi Roy of Tangail district married Subir Roy, owner of ‘Sheela Jewellers’ at Mujib Sarak in Sirajganj, in 1999.
Ever since the marriage, Sumi had been oppressed for dowry. At one point, she died on January 12, 2001.
Later, her father, Gopinath Biswas, filed a case with Sirajganj Sadar police station, accusing her husband, Subir Roy, brother-in-law Dr Sushil Roy, mother-in-law Usha Roy, paternal uncle Manoronjon Roy, and college teacher Sunil Roy, for her death.
The accused have been fugitives in India since the murder. Usha Roy, meanwhile, died before the verdict.
The verdict was handed down after examining the records and witnesses for 18 years.
