Hearing set for Mar 12 in garments HQ time plea

Update : 10 Mar 2017, 01:04 AM
The Supreme Court has fixed March 12 for hearing a petition filed by the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) seeking a three-year stay of execution for its Dhaka headquarters. The 15-storey building stands on a strategic spot between Hatirjheel lake and Begunbari canal in central Dhaka but its 2006 construction effectivley blocked the passage of water between the capital's two largest waterbodies. On March 5, the apex court dismissed a petition to review its 2016 verdict saying the building was built illegally and therefore must be demolished.

The Supreme Court had also ordered the BGMEA to inform it in a petition by Thursday (March 9) as to how long it would take to demolish the building. Separately, Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh (HRPB) lawyer Manzil Murshid has sent a legal notice to Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (Rajuk) over its failure to demolish the building. Rajuk, the development authority in Dhaka, was told to demolish the building after 90 days from the verdict publication date.
