Review petition hearing on BGMEA complex deferred

Update : 02 Mar 2017, 01:22 PM
The Supreme Court has deferred the hearing on a petition filed by BGMEA against the decision of the Appellate Division that asked to immediately demolish the 15-storey “BGMEA complex” constructed illegally on the Begunbari canal and Hatirjheel lake in Dhaka. A three-member of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha passed the order on Thursday as Attorney General Mahbubey Alam pleaded for more time. On June 2, 2016, the Supreme Court upheld a High Court ruling that had ordered the demolition of the BGMEA building. In 2011, the High Court found the building had been constructed violating laws protecting the wetlands. In 2013, after the full verdict was available, the High Court ordered the demolition of the building within 90 days upon receiving the court verdict. BGMEA then filled a leave-to-appeal petition against the order.
