The High Court granted bail to three detainees who were imprisoned for 10 years due the backlog in trial proceedings which kept them waiting a decade for a hearing, on Monday.
The High Court bench of justices AKM Abdul Hakim and Justice SM Mozibur Rahman awarded them bail till the disposal of the cases against them at trial courts and directed the court to finish the proceedings by three months.
The detainees, Md Dana Mia, Asadul and Saju Mian were imprisoned in Sylhet, Satkhira and Narsingdi respectively from 2006.
Chanchal Kumar Biswas panel lawyer at Supreme Court's Legal Aid Committee brought the matter to the High Court's attention on February 14 and the court issued a rule on their predicament the following day.
On February 15 the court also ordered eight other such accused to be produced, seven of them, including the trio who were presented yesterday.
“Two of those detainees Md Jalal and Asim Halder are suffering from mental illness issues because of their long imprisonment, the High Court asked the legal aid office to contact their parents and fixed March 6 to pass orders on Jalal, Asim and Sabbir's cases,” Chanchal Kumar Biswas said.
