A Dhaka court has granted bail to Lutfun Nahar Luma, a leader of the quota reform movement, in a case which accused her of spreading rumours on social media during the student demonstrations demanding safer roads.
Metropolitan Magistrate Subrata Ghosh Shuvo passed the order on Monday after hearing a bail petition filed by her counsel Barrister Jyotirmoy Barua.
On August 16, a court had granted police three days to question her in the case filed on August 5 at Ramna police station under the ICT Act, after Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s cybercrime unit’s Inspector Md Rafikul Islam, also the case investigation officer, had produced Luma before the court seeking a five-day remand.
Luma, a joint convener of the Bangladesh General Students’ Rights Protection Council that has been spearheading the quota reform movement since February, is also a second-year sociology student at Eden Women's College in Dhaka.
She was arrested on August 15 from her village in the Sirajganj’s Belkuchi upazila for allegedly spreading rumours on Facebook and instigating violence during the student movement for road safety.
She was brought to Dhaka the next day.
With Luma securing bail, the last detained student leader of the quota reform movement has been freed on bail.
