Three-day remand for quota reformist Luna

Lutfur Nahar Luna, a second-year sociology student at Eden Women's College in Dhaka, was arrested from her village in Belkuchi upazila, Sirajganj early Wednesday.

A Dhaka court has placed quota reform movement leader Lutfur Nahar Luna on a three-day remand in a case filed against her for allegedly spreading rumours on social media. 

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Kazi Kamrul Islam issued the order on Thursday when Inspector Md Rafikul Islam of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Cybercrime unit, also the investigation officer in the case, produced her before the court with a five-day remand petition. 

The court also denied a bail plea for the accused, and ordered the investigation officer to interrogate her in the presence of female police officials. 

Luna, a second-year sociology student at Eden Women's College in Dhaka, was arrested from her village in Belkuchi upazila, Sirajganj early Wednesday.

She was arrested under the ICT Act on charges of spreading rumours on social media and instigating violence during the recent student movement for road safety.

The case has been filed with Ramna police station.

So far, at least 97 people have been arrested in 51 different cases since the student protests in Dhaka demanding safe roads ended on August 7, according to multiple media reports.
