The High Court issued an order on Tuesday, to provide Tk1 crore as compensation to the family of Rajib Hasan, a student of Government Titumir College, who lost his right hand when it got stuck between two buses on April 3. He later died.
The High Court bench of Justice Salma Masud Chowdhury and Justice AKM Zahirul Hoque served the order.
The owners of Sajan Paribahan will have to pay Tk50 lakh, and Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BTRC) the remaining amount of Tk50 lakh, the court said.
Of the Tk 1 crore in compensation, Tk50 lakh will have to be paid within this month. A report has to be submitted to the court after this month on whether the compensation has been given or not.
The court also set June 24 for the next hearing.
Rajib's aunt Jahanara Parvin and his two brothers were present at the court on Tuesday (today).
On Monday, the High Court expressed shock over the tragic death of Rajib and decided on today for delivering the compensation order .
On April 4, the court issued a ruling asking the authorities concerned to explain why directives should not be given to provide Tk1 crore as compensation to Rajib Hasan.
On April 3, Rajib Hasan, a second year student of Government Titumir College, was onon a double-decker bus of Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC), headed for classes. He was standing at the rear gate dangling his right hand outside the overcrowded bus.
When the bus got stranded at the Sonargaon crossing near Panthakunja park, a Sajan Paribahan bus tried to make its way through the narrow space between the BRTC bus and the footpath. However, Rajib’s right hand was squashed between the two buses and got severed from the elbow.
Later, on April 17, Rajib died of a brain haemorrhage at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
