Court sends BCL leaders to jail over Gulistan eviction clashes

Metropolitan Magistrate Saifuzzaman Ansari rejected their bail petition when they surrendered before the court on Thursday and sent them to jail. Sub-Inspector Mahamudur Rahman, general recording officer at Dhaka Metropolitan Chief Magistrate Court,confirmed the matter to the Dhaka Tribune on Thursday. The court issued an arrest warrant on December 8 against the two Chhatra League leaders, Sabbir Hossain and Ashiqur Rahman, for opening fire at a crowd of hawkers when the DSCC officials conducted a drive to evict hawkers from the streets in Gulistan, Dhaka on October 27. Their actions led to a violent clash between the hawkers and the city corporation officials. Later, Sub-Inspector Abdul Mannanof Shahbagh police station filed an attempted murder case against 50 people, including Sabbir and Ashiqur. The two were also expelled from Chhatra League.
