The High Court has issued a rule asking the government to explain in four weeks why it should not declare illegal the inaction of concerned authorities in selecting efficient and experienced teachers to evaluate SSC and HSC answer scripts.
"Many students challenge their results every year and it is found that after reevaluation their marks usually increase," HRPB lawyer Manzill Murshid said. "There are even instances of students committing suicide after 'failing' in the examinations, although most of them obtained pass marks after re-checking of their answer scripts."
"We told the court that the board authorities were supposed to engage efficient and experienced teachers in evaluating the answer scripts, as in many cases they do not," Manzill said.
"Moreover, the education boards ask the teachers to complete checking the scripts and send them back to the board within 14 days after the examinations, which is actually difficult," the lawyer continued, adding that for this reason, many meritorious students do not get good grades.
The court also asked the government to explain why it should not be directed to give proper and necessary time to examiners for checking the answer scripts of Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examinations.
The education secretary and chairmen of different education boards have been made respondents to the rule.
