The High Court on Sunday ordered the Superintendent of Police of Chapainawabganj to appear before it on December 4 to explain his reported comment provoking people to take law into their hands.
The bench of Justice Quazi Reza-Ul Hoque and Justice Mohammad Ullah passed the suo moto order following a report on the matter published in a newspaper on Saturday.
The court also issued a rule asking the authorities concerned to explain why legal steps would not be taken against the SP, TM Mojahidul Islam, for his comments.
Md Ashrafuzzaman, a lawyer of the High Court, produced the report before the court in the morning.
The cabinet secretary, home secretary, law secretary, Inspector General of Police, and the SP and the deputy commissioner of Chapainawabganj were made respondents to the rule.
The court also asked the editor of the daily Amader Somoy to attend the hearing with necessary evidence of the claim.
According to the report, the SP while attending a programme at Chapainawabganj Eye Hospital on November 25 asked people to kill robbers if caught red handed. Local ruling party lawmaker Md Abdul Wadud was also present at the event.
In his speech, SP Mojahidul said: “If you can catch a robber red handed, just smash him to death. It is true that we will take a murder case but we will give final report in a month. I am guaranteeing you.
“Call the locals using loudspeakers to gather at a place and then smash the robbers. If it is a vehicle, torch it. I am assuring you that no case will be filed against you ...”
The SP made the comment only a day after four suspected robbers were killed in an alleged gunfight with RAB at Ishwardi in Pabna.
