The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has filed a case against former information minister Hasanul Haq Inu and his wife Afroza Haq on charges of acquiring assets beyond their known sources of income.
The cases were filed separately on Sunday, confirmed Md Akhtar Hossain, director general (prevention) of the ACC.
According to Akhtar Hossain, Inu is accused of amassing assets worth Tk4.84 crore through the abuse of power.
It is alleged that suspicious transactions amounting to Tk11.88 crore took place in four of his bank accounts.
In a separate case, his wife, Afroza Haq, is accused of acquiring assets worth Tk1.49 crore beyond her known sources of income. She is said to have become wealthy using the earnings of her husband.
Inu was arrested by the police in Uttara on August 26 last year.
Allegations of commission-based corruption against Sheikh Selim
Meanwhile, the ACC has initiated an investigation into corruption allegations against Sheikh Selim, the former member of parliament for Gopalganj-2.
Sheikh Selim, a presidium member of the Awami League, is accused of abusing power and engaging in irregularities and corruption by awarding Tk1,300 crore worth of tender work across various parts of the country to preferred contractors.
"These contractors, in turn, are alleged to have paid him a commission of 10-15%. The ACC has begun an investigation into these evidence-based allegations," said Akhtar.
On August 20 last year, the National Board of Revenue (NBR) ordered the freezing of 91 bank accounts belonging to Sheikh Selim and his family, as well as all financial accounts in related institutions.
Since the fall of Sheikh Hasina's government on August 5 of the previous year, Sheikh Selim has been in hiding.
