The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has filed cases against former food minister Md Qamrul Islam Islam, former state minister for disaster management and relief Md Mohibbur Rahman, and Mohibbur’s wife, Fatema Akter, for allegedly amassing wealth beyond their known sources of income.

Speaking to the media on Monday, ACC Director General (Prevention) Md Akhtar Hossain confirmed that three cases were filed at the commission's Dhaka and Patuakhali offices.

Md Qamrul Islam, a former MP from Dhaka-2, is accused of illegally acquiring assets worth over Tk6.29 crore.

The ACC has also directed his family members—wife Begum Tayeba Islam, son Dr Tanzir Islam, and daughter Segupta Islam—to submit their wealth statements.

According to ACC reports, Md Qamrul Islam’s son holds unexplained assets of Tk1.46 crore, while his daughter has Tk1.10 crore in unexplained assets.

The commission suspects the family may possess further hidden or unnamed assets.

The ACC alleges that Md Qamrul Islam used his public office to acquire these assets during his tenure as Minister of Food and State Minister for Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs between 2009 and 2019.

His bank records show transactions totaling Tk21.18 crore across 15 accounts, raising suspicions of money laundering.

Md Qamrul Islam, a senior leader of the ruling Awami League, has faced allegations of corruption in recruitment, transfers, and food imports during his tenure.

The ACC began its investigation into him in October, and he was arrested in November by the Detective Branch in Dhaka’s Uttara area.

Meanwhile, the ACC has filed two separate cases against Md Mohibbur Rahman, the former State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief, and his wife, Fatema Akter, over Tk11.56 crore in illegal assets.

In the first case, filed in Patuakhali, Mohibbur is accused of acquiring assets worth Tk7.64 crore and laundering Tk23.72 crore through 23 bank accounts.

The second case involves his wife, Fatema, who allegedly amassed assets worth Tk3.92 crore and conducted suspicious transactions of Tk15.51 crore across 11 accounts.

The ACC claims Fatema’s wealth is linked to her husband’s illegal activities.

Investigators also discovered that Fatema owns 37 acres of land near Kuakata and Payra Port, valued at Tk150 crore.

These properties were reportedly purchased after Mohibbur became an MP in 2018.

The ACC continues to investigate the activities of both individuals, with further developments expected.
