A third grade former employee of the Power Development Board has successfully made use of a government-issue SUV for 10 years. Even though he retired two years ago, Alauddin Mia, a former leader of public employees’ association, not only used the car, but he also ensured the driver and fuel expenses were paid for by the government as well.

Monday afternoon, the Anti-Corruption Commission’s enforcement team seized the SUV from Motijheel. The drive was detained, but released after his statement was obtained, according to the Bangla Tribune.

According to ACC Director General Munir Chowdhury, the SUV was allocated to PDB years ago.

He said: “Alauddin retired in 2017. He worked as a typist with PDB. He made use of the car since 2009. Over the past 10 years, the SUV has run up a bill of Tk35 lakh on fuel. The drive was paid Tk37 lakh in salary.”

The director general said the ACC will investigate how this appropriation occurred will take due action.

He also promised further investigation into any other similar abuse of vehicles in the government motor pool.
