The administration of Bijoy Ekattor Hall at Dhaka University has cancelled the residential seat of student Shahriyar Islam Tushar on allegations of harassment and physical assault of two women near the Raju Sculpture at the Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) area.
The decision was announced in a notice signed by Professor S M Ali Reza, provost of Bijoy Ekattor Hall, on Wednesday.
The incident first came to light on February 25 after a video circulated on social media. The following day, two people accompanying the victims filed a written complaint with the university’s proctor’s office, prompting the formation of an investigation committee.
Acting on the committee’s recommendations, the university suspended three students for six months on March 10. The suspended students are Shahriyar Islam Tushar of the Theatre and Performance Studies Department, Rakib Ahmed of the World Religions and Culture Department, and Shahriyar Tanzil of the Anthropology Department.
According to the hall administration notice, Tushar’s suspension was issued in connection with the February 24 incident near the Raju Sculpture at TSC. His allocated seat has since been revoked in line with university regulations, following a memo from the proctor’s office dated March 10.
The notice also said Tushar must surrender his hall identity card, room key and other hall property, and vacate the premises within seven days.
