'BNP withdraws from polls losing people’s support'

Update : 28 Apr 2015, 07:35 AM

Publicity and Publication Affairs Secretary of Awami League Hassan Mahmud said the BNP had withdrawn from the city corporation elections as they had lost the people’s support.

He made the statement at a press briefing at the election office of Awami-backed candidate AZM Nasir on Tuesday afternoon in Chittagong.

He said: “They [BNP] realised they have lost the people’s support. But now they are complaining about vote rigging.”

Talking about the decision of BNP-backed mayoral aspirant M Manjur Alam to retire from politics, Hassan Mahmud said: “M Manjur Alam did not declare to leave politics because of the election, but because he did not get the support he expected from his party.”

Hassan Mahmud also claimed the election was going on peacefully.

Earlier in the day, the BNP rejected the polls in both the city corporations under Dhaka and Chittagong, terming it farcical.
