Power Cell seeks Power Division’s approval for shortlisted LNG terminal builders

Update : 24 Apr 2015, 08:24 PM

The Power Cell sought the Power Division’s approval to short-list three international firms for awarding contract to build the country’s first onshore liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal.

A letter has recently been sent to the Power Division in this regard.

“After approval, the short-listed firms will be requested to submit final proposal for building the terminal,” Power Cell Director General Mohammad Hossain told the Dhaka Tribune yesterday.

The planned onshore terminal will be the country’s first LNG terminal. The selected firms are Japan’s Mitsui and Company Ltd, Royal Dutch’s Shell EP International Ltd and India’s Petronet LNG Ltd.

The government is going to set up the country’s first-ever land based LNG terminal at Anwara in Chittagong or Moheskhali in Cox’s Bazar.

Earlier, the power cell sought expressions of interest (EOI) from international firms for the project.

The purpose of setting up the terminal is to import LNG, so that the country does not have to face any sudden energy crisis because of supply shortfall in the near future.

The Power Cell received a $155m credit from the International Development Agency (IDA) for financing the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Development 2 project.

Part of the credit is intended as payment for consulting services for feasibility study on LNG terminal at Anwara and Moheskhali.

The power cell was planning to set up a land-based LNG terminal to feed a proposed 2,000MW combined cycle power plant and feeding the existing power plants at Raojan and Sikalbaha by one or more high pressure gas transmission pipelines to be connected from the LNG terminal.
