Being panicked over death of two students in a clash on the campus, students of Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University in Dinajpur yesterday started leaving the campus.
During a visit to the campus this correspondent found that many residents of Shaheed Nur Hossen Hall, Shaheed Rastrapati Ziaur Rahman Hall, Tajuddin Ahmed Hall, Sheikh Fajilatunnesa Mujib Hall, Sheikh Rasel Hall and Tajuddin Hall were leaving the campus, although university authorities did not ask them to leave the campus. They said they feel unsecured to stay on the campus that’s why they were leaving the campus.
Meanwhile, the authorities of the university yesterday formed a body to investigate the death of two students who were killed during a clash which took place between two factions of the Bangladesh Chhatra League.
Registrar of the university Nazibur Rahman said a five-member probe committee headed by Prof Dr Anis Khan, dean of the Agriculture Faculty, was formed to investigate the incident. The committee was asked to submit its report within two working days.
The other committee members are Prof Dr Balram Roy, dean of the Post Graduate Department, Proctor Prof Dr ATM Shafiqul Islam, Prof Dr Saifur Rahman and chairman of the Statistics Department Prof Dr Shahadat Hossain Khan.
Two students – Zakaria, a second-semester student of business faculty, and Mahmudul Hasan Milton, a masters student of agriculture faculty, were killed and over 50 injured in the clash on Thursday night over establishing supremacy on the campus.
Officer-in-charge of Kotwali police station Khalequzzaman yesterday told the Dhaka Tribune that the bodies had been handed over to family members. The university authorities have also decided to file a case in this connection, said Ruhul Amin, vice-chancellor of the university, adding that actions would be taken after investigation.
Campus sources said supporters of a faction of the BCL arrived in four micro-buses and turned off the electricity connection when the university’s vice-chancellor was addressing a freshers’ reception at university auditorium around 7pm on Thursday.
Then, the BCL men also started hurling crude bombs and firing gunshots at the participants of the programme.
On receiving information, supporters of another faction came to the scene and engaged in counter attack that triggered a clash between them.
During the clash, the two groups chased each other several times and activists of both the factions vandalised several rooms of university building. Later, police recovered the body of Zakaria from the rooftop of Noor Hussain Hall.
Meanwhile, Mahmudul Hasan Milton died at Dinajpur Medical College Hospital after he was admitted in a critical condition.
Dinajpur Police Superintendent Ruhul Amin said police recovered lethal weapons from several halls of the university after the attackers left the campus.
