A supporter of Awami League mayoral candidate Annisul Huq and five other councilor aspirants have been fined a total of Tk66,000 for violating electoral code of conduct.
Anwar Hossain, the supporter of Annisul Huq, was fined Tk20,000 for placing posters of the mayoral aspirant to walls in Manikdi Bazar on Friday.
On the other hand, general ward councilor aspirants – Md Hasan Ali and Nazrul Islam Munmun were fined Tk10,000 and Ibrahim Khan and Md Rafiqul Islam were fined Tk8,000 while Parvin Hossain Maya, a reserved woman ward councilor candidate, has been fined Tk10,000.
Executive Magistrate Sarwoer Alam fined them for conducting election campaigns in advance in wards 15 and 16 under Bhashantek area using leaflets and posters.
“Running campaigns before the schedule is a violation of electoral code of conduct, which is why they have faced financial penalty,” said Sarwoer.
He said campaigns could be conducted for the April 28 elections only from April 8, and any campaign before that was not permitted.
“Moreover, all campaigns have to end on April 26, 48 hours before the election date,” added the magistrate.
