Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority has appointed a Korean firm to rehabilitate and expand a 376 km of water supply pipe network of Fakirapool, Malibagh, Moghbazar, Mouchak, Rampura and adjacent areas of Dhaka.
Dhaka Wasa and Kunhwa Engineering and Consulting Company, inked an agreement in this regard yesterday.
Wasa Managing Director Taqsem A Khan and the Korean firm’s Bangladesh representative Wui Jae Kim signed the deal on behalf of their respective organisations, while Charge de Affairs of the Korean Embassy, Kim Hyun Joo, was present as guest of honour.
Financed by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the 42-month project will start next month.
Once this project is completed as part of the Wasa’s Environment-Friendly Sustainable Water Supply Project the quality of water is expected to improve.
After signing the deal, Kim Hyun Joo said Bangladesh would continue to receive support from Korea, especially concerning water supply know-how.
He said the two countries would also share experience of this utility.
The WASA managing director said: “In the recent years, Wasa has brought many substantial changes in the water supply system. We are gradually moving towards an environment-friendly, sustainable and people-oriented water supply system.”
“During the term of the incumbent government, Wasa’s capacity has grown. At present, Wasa has a capacity of producing 242 crore litres of water every day against a demand of 230 crore litres.”
