Former BNP lawmaker Nasir Uddin Ahmed Pintu, who is a life convict in the BDR carnage case, has submitted his nomination form to contest in the upcoming Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) mayoral race.
Pintu's wife Nasima Akhter Kolpona submitted the paper on behalf of her husband around 3:15pm Sunday.
When asked about their discussions with BNP regarding the election, Nasima said: “We have got the support of the people of the area, so we have submitted the nomination paper.
“We have not yet talked to the party [BNP] regarding the election nomination. Pintu has been serving the party for a long time and we are hoping that Chairperson Khaleda Zia will support us,” she said.
She added they render their support to the candidate selected by BNP.
Talking about election ambience, she said they have not yet noticed any positivity which would ensure a successful election.
“We will apply for parole if Pintu is selected by the party,” the former lawmaker's wife said.
Some 20 leaders and activists entered the Returning Officer's office along with Nasima while submitting the form, reports our correspondent from the spot.
According to electoral code of conduct, a candidate cannot take more than five people along with him during the submission of nomination.
The Election Commission has fixed April 28 for holding the polls in Dhaka North, Dhaka South and Chittagong City Corporations.
The deadline for submitting the papers is March 29. Scrutiny will be done on April 1 and 2 and the last date for withdrawal is April 9.
On November 5, 2013, Pintu and Awami League leader Torab Ali have been awarded life-term imprisonment for their involvement in the BDR carnage in 2009.
The court also fined him Tk500,000. Later in January, 2014, the convict filed an appeal with the High Court, challenging his conviction in the BDR carnage case.
