IS hostage Helal talks from Libya

Update : 24 Mar 2015, 10:18 AM

Helal Uddin, who was taken hostage by the Islamic militant group ISIS in Libya, has made a surprising phone call to his family members in Jamalpur.

Helal made the unexpected phone call to his family members first time since he was abducted by the ISIS militants, around 10:30am Tuesday, reported our Jamalpur correspondent.

Helal Uddin was taken hostage, along with eight other foreign nationals, during an attack on a central oil field by militants from Libya's Islamic State affiliate.

Quoting Helal's wife Aleya, our correspondent said during the four minutes conversation, the ill-fated Bangladeshi worker told his wife that he heard the militants talking about the release of Bangladeshi labourers.

“The militants let him make the phone call and they may set the Bangladeshi hostages free within a day or two,”Aleya told the Dhaka Tribune.

According to Helal, the ISIS militants have held three Bangladeshi workers hostage along with him and Noakhali's Anwar. However, he did not say anything about the identity of the third abductee.

Aleya said: “The sudden and unexpected phone call gave some sort of mental comfort to the family members. But, the looming uncertainty over his security is still giving us pain. We will certainly not be in peace until the militants release him.”

The Bangladesh Foreign Ministry confirmed of the abduction of Helal through a press release on March 9.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the authorities in Bangladesh Embassy in Tripoli, are closely monitoring the entire situation.
