Report: 62% Bangladeshis use internet for job hunting

Update : 21 Mar 2015, 05:15 AM

Majorities of internet users in Bangladesh (62%) use internet to search jobs related information, said a recent research conducted by Pew Research Center.

The US based research centre released the report titled “Internet Seen as Positive Influence on Education but Negative on Morality in Emerging and Developing Nations” on March 19.

The report read: “Majorities of internet users in Bangladesh (62%) and India (55%) say they have looked for a job online in the past year, the highest rates among the 31 countries surveyed that have enough internet users to analyze.”

The nonpartisan fact tank also added that “Very few people in India and Bangladesh use the internet – only 20% and 11% respectively. But among those who do, job searching is a popular activity.”

According to the research centre, only 1% of the population in Bangladesh said they own a working landline telephone in their household, while 76% own cell phones.

“Of the cell phone users, only 6% have smart phones.”

The report further stated that among people in emerging and developing nations who have access to the internet, nearly two-thirds access it daily.

“Men are more likely than women to share sports news with their family and friends online. Of the internet users in Bangladesh, 76% use social media platforms.”

The survey was conducted among 36,619 people in 32 emerging and developing countries from March 17 to June 5, 2014.

All interviews were conducted face-to-face. Comparison figures from the US are from a Pew Research telephone survey conducted April 22 to May 11, 2014, among 1,002 people, unless otherwise noted.
