Leaders of transport workers in Rajshahi issued threat with unidentified transport strike in western part of the country if the officer-in-charge of Boalia police station Alamgir Hossain is not withdrawn within 72 hours for his alleged extortion and corruption.
Leaders issued the threat yesterday afternoon after a protest rally followed by a procession at Shiroil bus terminal in the city.
At the rally, transport workers’ leaders threaten that if the OC would not be withdrawn within 72 hours they would go on transport strike in western region for indefinite period.
Mahatab Ali, general secretary of Motor Workers’ Union said “on March 1, pro-hartal activists set two buses of Hanif Paribahan on fire. Police filed a case in this regard not specifying the name and number of the buses which is essential to get damages from government.” “When we asked for naming the buses and its number, OC Alamgir demanded Tk2 lakh as toll.”
“Even, the OC refused to file complain when we went to him for filing case but later police themselves filed a case in this regard accusing people as their wish,” Mahatab said.
Police however, intentionally made Abu Mostafa, Rajshahi bureau chief of daily Jugantor as accused in the case, Mahatab added.
It is stated that Boalia police also named journalist Anu Mostafa in two other cases under explosive substance act and arson attack.
“Earlier, I reported about the alleged extortion and corruption of OC Alamgir and few others officials of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police, he named me in the cases just for revenge,” Anu said while talking to the Dhaka Tribune.
However, journalists’ leader of Rajshahi submitted a memorandum to Rajshahi district administrator addressing the state minister for home to withdraw the cases against journalist Anu Mostafa.
