Pragatishil Chhatra Jote, an alliance of left-leaning student organisations, will observe strike at Dhaka University on Monday, protesting the killing of writer Avijit Roy.
Hasan Tarek, convener of the alliance, announced a four-day protest in a press conference at Modhur Canteen of Dhaka University (DU) on Saturday afternoon.
They will also submit a memorandum to the home ministry on Wednesday, demanding the government's immediate action to arrest the killers of Avijit.
Their four-day long protest programme includes wearing black badges at DU on Sunday and staging a solidarity rally at Shahbagh intersection on Tuesday.
Chhatra Union President Hasan Tarek told the reporters, such murder indicates none of us are safe and if this murder goes without punishment, 40,000 students in the campus will remain insecured.
Demanding immediate ban on fundamentalism based political organisations, Chhatra Federation President Saikat Mollick said, "Only secular and democratic practices in the state can ensure the security of citizens and the fundamental politics should be eliminated.”
The murder is a threat for the democratic right of expression and we will continue our protest until our demand is not meet, he added.
General secretary of Biplobi Chhatramoitri Sadikur Rahman, Chhatra Front Office Secretary Nasir Uddin were also present in the press conference.
Avijit, 45, was hacked to death and his wife Rafida Ahmed Bonna, 35, was seriously injured in an attack by unidentified assailants near the TSC roundabout on Thursday night.
Only hours after the death of the author and blogger, the responsibility of the crime was claimed by a Twitter account reportedly belonging to “Ansar Bangla 7” – a group believed to be an Islamist outfit.
Family sources said Avijit – a naturalised US citizen who lived in the American state of Georgia – came to Bangladesh with his wife on February 15 after two new books he authored were published at the Ekushey Book Fair.
