UN chief renews call for peaceful solution

Update : 26 Feb 2015, 11:58 AM

United Nation's Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has renewed his appeal to all political leaders of Bangladesh to seek a peaceful resolution to the ongoing crises.

Stéphane Dujarric, Spokesman for the UN boss, briefed journalists on the appeal of the UN chief at the organisation's headquarters in New York, USA, around noon (local time) on Thursday.

Referring to the “heightened tensions and the continuing political violence” in Bangladesh, Stéphane Dujarric said “ ... he [UN chief] renews his appeal to all political leaders to seek a peaceful resolution to the current crisis for the good of long‑term development and the stability of Bangladesh.”

Replying to a query, Dujarric said the UN was aware of the arrest warrant against BNP chief Khaleda Zia.

"The Secretary‑General remains very concerned."

Asked about the Amnesty International's reported that read the law enforcement agencies in Bangladesh are doing continuously extrajudicial killings, the spokesman said: “I have not seen the Amnesty International report. I think I would just underscore once again the Secretary‑General's call to all political leaders in Bangladesh to find a peaceful political resolution.”

Regarding the issue of the arrest of Nagorik Oikya Convener Mahmudur Rahman Manna, Dujarric said: “I have no specific information on the case or the people.”

At least 76 people were killed in the ongoing blockade enforced by BNP in demand of a fresh election since January 6 this year, and of the dead 42 people were burned alive.

BNP and its key allies including Jamaat-e-Islami boycotted the last parliamentary election held in early January last year, fearing it would not be fair.

In the election, in more than half of the constituencies, MPs were elected uncontested.
